Costa Diadema
Dream class (Costa Diadema) · refurbished 2023 · Northern Europe & Fjords, Other
Entering service in 2014, this large ship in the 132,000-ton class was ordered directly by Costa. Its defining feature is an outdoor promenade encircling the hull, allowing passengers to walk while viewing fjord scenery—a strength during the Northern Europe season. In summer 2026, it will sail to the Norwegian fjords from Kiel and Copenhagen; in winter, it will operate in the South America season around Brazil and Argentina.

- Japan departures: No
- Home ports: Kiel (Germany, summer departure port for Northern European fjords), Savona (Italy, departure port for autumn and winter Mediterranean cruises)
- Departure ports: Kiel, Copenhagen (Denmark), Flam, Bergen, Stavanger (Norway, fjord area), Savona, Marseille (France), Barcelona (Spain), Civitavecchia (Italy, near Rome)
- All ages
- True to its name Diadema (Italian for tiara, or a crown), the Costa flagship features lavish interiors with a crown motif. The Eliodoro Atrium, which rises through Decks 3 to 11, has four panoramic glass elevators and more than 7,000 artworks, creating a 'palace at sea' effect. Seasonal deployments continue: in summer to Northern Europe and the Norwegian fjords from its home port of Kiel, and in autumn and winter around the Mediterranean (Barcelona, Marseille, Civitavecchia, etc.) from Italian ports such as Savona.
- A lively, multinational clientele, mainly Italian, with passengers from France, Germany, Spain, and other southern European and European countries. Families and multigenerational travelers make up a high proportion. There are no Japanese-speaking staff or Japanese cuisine.
Launched in 2014 as a Dream-class ship, it is not equipped with next-generation fuel engines such as LNG (Costa's LNG ships start with Costa Smeralda). Its environmental measures are limited to what was standard when it entered service, such as advanced wastewater treatment and LED lighting, and details such as any proprietary environmental certification could not be confirmed.

Families, adults-only areas, and practical information
- • Squok Club — A Costa kids and teen club for ages 3-17, with play equipment modeled on a fairy-tale castle and pirate ship, plus a separate teen area for ages 12-17.
- • Lido Squok Mini Aqua Park — A small aquapark for children with an outdoor play area, wading pool, and mini water slide.
- • Golden Jubilee Casino — A casino with slot machines and gaming tables at the aft of Deck 5.
- Onboard currency
- EUR
- Gratuities
- The service charge (gratuity) is not included in the fare. Instead, a fixed amount per night is automatically added to the onboard account after boarding. It applies uniformly to all ships and all guests regardless of fare type (Basic/Comfort-type/Deluxe), and guests are not expected to reduce or remove it at their discretion.
- Payment
- Cashless onboard
- Voltage
- Mainly 220V (depending on the ship, some are a mix supporting 110-220V/60Hz). Japanese devices that are 100V-only may not be usable without a transformer, so please check.
- Formal nights
- The number of gala nights roughly scales with cruise length: about 1 on a 3 to 4 night cruise, 2 on a 7-night cruise and 3 on a 10-night cruise. On Mediterranean cruises, 1 to 2 is typical.
- Medical facilities
- There is a medical center staffed by doctors and nurses, available 24 hours for emergencies. Consultations and treatment are not free and are charged to your onboard account each time (travel insurance generally cannot be used directly at the counter, and costs are usually claimed afterward). An exact Costa-specific fee schedule could not be confirmed from public information.
- Bringing items onboard
- Bringing alcohol on board is prohibited in principle, whether at embarkation or at ports of call, and anything found in X-ray screening is confiscated until the end of the cruise. Wine and champagne may be allowed only if approved by prior application, in which case a corkage fee of €10 per bottle is charged. Alcohol purchased at ports of call or in the onboard duty-free shops is also held until the end of the cruise (effectively confiscated).
- Mobile and connectivity
- The EU "free roaming" rule applies only on land, such as at ports of call. If your phone connects to the ship's maritime network at sea, expensive maritime roaming charges outside the scope of the regulation (both calls and data are far higher than usual) apply, so the practical standard approach at sea is to put your phone offline or in airplane mode and use Costa's onboard Wi-Fi package or an eSIM.
