A major city in southern Kyushu overlooking Sakurajima, an active volcano rising in Kagoshima Bay. The sight of smoke rising from Sakurajima across the water is spectacular, and visitors can take a ferry across to walk along the lava promenade. Nearby attractions include Sengan-en, which conveys the history of the Satsuma domain, sites associated with the Meiji Restoration, and Ibusuki, known for its natural sand baths. Hot springs, abundant cuisine, and grand volcanic scenery are among its attractions.
